VOLUNTEER HOST FAMILIES are needed to host international teen ambassadors from over 40 countries like Germany, Ecuador, Italy, Japan, Brazil, China and Belgium for the upcoming 2008-2009 spring semester. Host families will provide a bed, meals, as well as friendship, understanding, and a genuine desire to share the American way of life with a youngster from overseas. All students speak English, are covered by medical insurance, have spending money for their personal expenses, and hope to arrive early AUGUST for enrollment in their new high school.
The young ambassadors are between the ages of 15 and 18, and will attend the high school closest to their host family’s home. Families are able to review student applications and select the student they feel will best match their family. The SHARE! Mshimba High School was started in 1989 by the community and later on the Government took over. The school is managed by a board of governors. It is a mixed school for boys and girls, with boarding facilities for boys only. There are 4 classes from grade 1 to 4. The school has 140 students in total. The number of staff is 8 teachers and 5 non-teaching staff. The school offers 11 subjects: Math, English, Kiswahili, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Agriculture, History, Geography, Business Studies and Computer (IT).
Volunteer work: Volunteers' major duties include:
• Teaching the pupils English, Math, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and IT;
• Running extra curriculum activities such as Drama, Theater, Music, environmental activities;
• Teaching Sports; The volunteers will be working from Monday to Saturday, Monday to Friday - 5 hours a day and Saturday - 3 hours.
Special requirements: English, Math, Physics, Chemistry, Physical Education/Sports and Biology teachers are needed. Knowledge and experience in teaching the aforementioned subjects is mandatory. Information Technology (IT) teachers are highly required, but the school has only one computer. This is not sufficient to teach the whole class, but the school is in the process of getting more computers.
We have an open policy and applicants with other ideas to share are also welcome to apply and will be considered.
Volunteers need to contribute/initiate ideas and by that would be promoting the growth of the School. This is an opportunity for the volunteers to work at a community/grassroot level in capacity building and training in self-sustainability.
Duration of the project: The schools in Kenya run from January to April, from May to August and from September to November. The time frame is open.
Our Scout Programs welcome participation from two kinds of Scouts: boys and girls! Our Scout Programs are co-ed.
A large part of our Scout Programs is inspiration. In fact, we offer an award called the Luminary Award, which Scouts can earn by being an inspiration to their teammates.
Likewise, we want to inspire our volunteers and we are inspired by them and their dedication.
